Students dance during the Hispanic heritage celebration

Buncombe County Early College and Buncombe County Middle College students danced, played games, and shared traditional foods with their school during a Hispanic heritage celebration last Friday.

Ms. Darcy Wallace’s Heritage Spanish I class created a gallery of student artwork highlighting Hispanic Americans. They hosted a dance party, gave out snacks and gifts, played Lotería (similar to Bingo), and created “family shields” that expressed their identities. The students came up with the idea, and they were proud to see so many classmates swing by.

“We talked about putting up decorations that represent our culture and bringing snacks that share our culture with other students,” said Yareli, a third-year student. “It just grew from there.”

As Latin beats drifted into the hallway from Ms. Wallace’s classroom on Friday afternoon, students and teachers walked in and out, laughing and sharing in a joyous time.

“People got more and more comfortable and started interacting with each other,” said Ernesto, another third-year student. “It was a really great experience.”
