Art in the Afternoon is an arts-based after school program in Black Mountain, North Carolina, serving students in grades K-5. The program focuses on visual art and character building, and has operated for 13 years. Learn more on the program Facebook page or contact the director by email.
The Asheville Museum of Science is hosting school day camps for first through sixth-graders Monday-Friday, 8:15am to 2:30pm, with after school hours available for an additional fee. Cost per week is $225 for non-members and $200 for members. Each class will have its own area for learning within the museum and a supportive AMOS Educator to facilitate remote learning. Asheville Sun Soo Martial Arts will be hosting a Learning camp from 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. with options for early drop-off and late pick-up. The facility will be set up like an academic school environment with tables and chairs to facilitate school curriculum learning. 12 school hour days per month are available at a cost of $475/month and unlimited days per month for $775/month. Camp Good News, located on a 15-acre site on Maranatha Road in Fairview, will serve a maximum of 25 students from ages 7-16 beginning Monday August 17. The facility will remain open for students Monday through Friday of each week, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will serve breakfast and lunch as well as snacks. WiFi is available for remote learning use by students. The cost for full-day students is $150.00 peer week, and the cost for after-school students is $75.00 per week, with some scholarships available for those in need. Center Stage Dance Studio is offering a Virtual Classroom for students in grades 2 through 8. The Center Stage Virtual Classroom (CSVC) program will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. beginning on August 17th. CSVC will provide a safe and inspiring environment to facilitate your child’s learning during the 2020-2021 school year. Creative Village, a five-star childcare center, is located in Swannanoa at 20 Cavalier Lane and serves children from 6 weeks to 5 years old, Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Snacks are served and price is dependent on age. The newly constructed Donald Collins Early Learning Center at 120 West Street in Black Mountain will be open for children by August 24, 2020. They welcome all families and are dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing, and loving atmosphere, with a developmentally appropriate education. The early childhood program for children six weeks through five-years of age will be open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each weekday. School aged children can attend a program from 7:30am until 1:30 p.m., with an extension program available until 5:30 p.m. K-2 teaching assistants will be available to assist students with their remote classwork and costs vary per age. Elevate Life and Art will be offering after-school and all-day care this fall for K-5 students starting August 17, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Each child will have their own learning space in order to complete schoolwork, eat, and practice safe social distancing measures. There will be structured, personal care provided by kind and consistent staff. An afternoon snack, learning breaks, and homework assistance are provided. The cost is $135 per week per child, with scholarships, part-time rates, daily rates, and sibling discounts available, in addition to an after-school pick-up and care option. Evolve Early Learning in West Asheville will open on Sept. 8 offering "personalized and in-person program options that focus on the social, emotional, and cognitive development of your child. We have a Collective Care Agreement that protects our bubble. We have small classes and dedicated teacher-leaders. School hours are 7:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. with aftercare from 3:00-5:30 p.m. We provide a healthy lunch from Laughing Seed. We are private pay and take subsidies. Kathy's Kiddieland on East State Street, Black Mountain, is open for children ages 2 - 12 from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays for a weekly cost of $125. Remote learners are welcome to bring their student-assigned devices. Learn more by calling 828-357-5674 or visit their Facebook page.
Outdoor Adventure Kids (OAK) at The North Carolina Arboretum is "an outdoor, safety- first approach to exploring the natural world with other kids. The North Carolina Arboretum's team of expert environmental educators are excited to resume in-person instruction for youth ages 6-9 years old with new weekday drop-off programs. Riveter in Mills River provides active day camps and after school activities for students ages 6 through 15. Full Day camps are 8am - 3pm and after school activities are 12:30pm-5:30pm, with varied costs depending on the program ($280/week, $225/5 days, or $400/10 days). Roots and Wings School for Art and Design's Visual Arts preschool has morning, in-person programming, for kids age 3-6 that promotes early development through the exploration of various forms of art. For families with 3-6 year olds at home, our Roots + Wings Little Wings is a monthly Innovative Pre-K Creative Cultivation Curriculum that allows learning through creative experiences at home with materials delivered to your door. Roots + Wings also has virtual ANYtime Creativity Camps which include a unique kit of art materials, for kids as young as age 3 to grade 8 to explore different themes and projects at your own pace throughout the school year.

Trinity of Fairview will hold an Academic and Afternoon Camp this fall from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. for a cost of $200 per child per week. The YMCA of Western North Carolina has committed to enhancing their childcare options in order to serve more BCS families. In addition to its onsite after-school programs, the Y will offer full-day care at the YMCA Youth Services Center at Beaverdam and the Reuter Family YMCA during plan B weeks. During Plan C the Y will operate “School’s Out” locations in the Roberson, Reynolds, Enka, and North Buncombe districts for Buncombe County Schools. Please call the YMCA at 828-251-5910 to register.
At the YWCA of Asheville, children enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade who are currently learning virtually will have access to a safe learning environment with WiFi access, meals (breakfast, lunch, and snack), outdoor activities and crafts, while guardians work. Beginning August 17, Zaniac in Asheville will be open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday, with the Zaniac Learning Lab (8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.) and After-School STEM Club (2:30 p.m. - 5 p.m.) for kids in grades 1-8.
